NDSA Issues Safety Notice to NVDA Over Bargi Dam Safety Lapses
The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) has issued a show-cause notice to the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) regarding safety lapses at Bargi Dam, a major multipurpose dam on the Narmada River. Constructed as part of the Narmada Valley Development Project, Bargi Dam is critical for irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric power generation.
It features 21 spillway gates to manage floodwaters and protect downstream areas. The dam also supports the Bargi Diversion Project, which enhances irrigation to drought-prone regions, and the Rani Avantibai Lodhi Sagar Project, which facilitates large-scale water distribution. The reservoir created by the dam is essential for drinking water, energy, fisheries, and tourism, underscoring its economic and social importance for the region.
