NEC Modifies Strategy for Chaira Pumped Storage Plant Hydro Unit Replacement
The National Electric Company (NEC) will change its strategy for replacing hydroelectric units at the Chaira pumped storage power plant, moving from a single large contract to three smaller contracts for specific activities. The acting Minister of Energy Traicho Traikov announced this decision after unsuccessful contractor bids.
The third hydroelectric unit will be operational by April, while the second unit is currently active. The initial budget was BGN 242 million. Toshiba is among the potential contractors facing construction and installation risks. A temporary repair for the first unit is planned for next year, with a complete replacement aimed for future decades.
