NEMA Launches Domestic Waste Management Pilot in Mukono, Uganda with Heavy Fines for Littering
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) launched a domestic waste management pilot in Upper Nabuti Village, Mukono, Uganda, aimed at enhancing urban climate resilience and enforcing anti-littering laws. The project, supported by the International Growth Centre and the London School of Economics, focuses on moving towards a circular economy through household waste segregation over the next year.
Licensed waste handlers will collaborate with community scouts to monitor waste management behaviors, while Kiwanga serves as a control site for comparison. The initiative addresses littering and public health risks, with potential expansion to other urban areas if successful. Under the National Environment Act, littering can incur fines up to 11 million shillings.
