NEOVAC Unveils Revolutionary Cold Coating Technology for High-Strength Steels

HYDROGEN

NEOVAC, a joint venture between SMS group GmbH and SITIZN Group Holding AG located in Karlstein, Germany, has introduced an innovative coating technology specifically designed for high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels. This advanced method, characterized as a "cold" process, preserves the material properties while delivering superior coating quality, making it suitable for applications in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, and lightweight construction.

The new vacuum coating technology boasts significant ecological and technical advantages. Notably, it achieves carbon neutrality when powered by renewable electricity, thus aligning with sustainability goals. The process is energy-efficient, utilizing fewer resources compared to traditional electrolytic coating methods, which often entail high CO2 emissions.

The pilot line, capable of handling steel coils weighing up to five tons and measuring up to 1,000 meters in length, employs a three-stage method comprising plasma pre-treatment, magnetron pre-coating, and a novel plasma-enhanced evaporation technique. Zinc is evaporated at temperatures exceeding 600áC; however, the deposition occurs below 200áC without hydrogen input, ensuring minimal alteration of the steel's microstructure. This allows for the successful coating of ultra-high-strength steel strips with tensile strengths reaching 1,500 MPa.

NEOVAC has confirmed the system's readiness for series production and encourages interested companies to experience the technology through test coatings. The line is designed for scalability and can transition from coil-to-coil to continuous production, enhancing efficiency further.

As a leader in innovative solutions for the metals industry, SMS group emphasizes its commitment to fostering a sustainable and carbon-neutral future, leveraging over 150 years of expertise to support its global clientele.
