Nepal Indigenous Leaders File New Writ Petition Against Chhujung River Hydropower Project

Indigenous leaders from the Bhote-Lhomi Singsa community in northeastern Nepal have filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court against the Chhujung River Hydropower Project, demanding its cancellation and the halting of construction activities. The project, which is expected to be completed in 2028, has faced criticism due to potential environmental impacts outlined in the environmental impact assessment (EIA).

Approximately 81 households in Ridak and others in Thudam and Chyamtang are affected, relying on agriculture and yak herding for their livelihoods. The EIA indicates extensive use of explosives that may affect nearby glacial lakes and overlooks threatened wildlife.

The project has reportedly exceeded the tree removal stated in the EIA, raising concerns about local ecosystems. The next court hearing is scheduled for December 17.
