Nepal's 640 MW Kaligandaki Reservoir Hydropower Project Advances
Nepal is advancing the 640 MW Kaligandaki reservoir hydropower project, despite facing significant challenges. The project aims to enhance power generation and irrigation while addressing environmental and social impacts.

The Nepali government is progressing with the Kaligandaki hydropower project, now scaled down to 640 MW from an initial 844 MW. Located 17 km upstream of the Kaligandaki 'A' plant, the project has a total estimated cost of Rs 225.05 billion and aims to generate 1,645.65 GWh annually.
It will impact 36 wards across seven local units and displace around 2,100 individuals. Approximately 1,940 hectares of land will be required, including forested areas. Despite higher costs compared to run-of-river projects, the initiative could provide irrigation for 344 hectares and an annual return of nearly Rs 7 billion, contingent on effective management of environmental and social challenges.
