NESO Visits FutureGrid Hydrogen Test Site in Cumbria for Energy Decarbonization
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) visited the FutureGrid facility at DNV Spadeadam in Cumbria to support decarbonization efforts. FutureGrid tests how existing gas pipelines can safely transport hydrogen, contributing to Project Union, the UK's national hydrogen network. The facility provides critical data for NESO's Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP), which will identify long-term energy needs and infrastructure locations.

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) visited the FutureGrid facility at DNV Spadeadam in Cumbria to aid in decarbonizing the UK energy system. FutureGrid, using decommissioned gas infrastructure, is integral to Project Union, demonstrating how gas pipelines can safely transport hydrogen.
This visit provided NESO with insights for its Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP), which will outline long-term energy requirements and optimal infrastructure locations. FutureGrid is essential for hydrogen's role in industries that cannot be electrified, enhancing energy security and supporting decarbonization.
