NetXeroC reports that technically, all water in ethanol plants can be reused, with practical rates between 95% and 97.5% after operational losses. In contrast, addressing carbon dioxide emissions and air pollution remains a significant challenge, highlighting the necessity for targeted government policies to encourage the adoption of existing CO2 capture technologies.
Ethanol plants consume approximately 8 to 15 liters of fresh water per liter of ethanol, depending on the feedstock type. The company is currently piloting a new design to optimize Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) efficiency and reduce operational footprints.
Industry challenges include low-quality contracting and conflicts of interest among consultants. Regulatory compliance is being consistently met or exceeded by their installations, which utilize advanced anaerobic treatment systems achieving up to 98% COD reduction.
