New Baltic Sea Cable Installation Amid Security Concerns
Eastern Light's undersea cable project aims to connect data centers in Sweden and Finland, with a budget of approximately €30 million. Expected completion in 2028, the cable will enhance internet connectivity but faces risks from recent cable damage incidents linked to foreign vessels.

Eastern Light is investing about €30 million to install an 11-kilometer undersea cable connecting data centers in Akalla, Sweden, to facilities in Esbo, Finland, expected to become operational by 2028. The cable weighs 213 tons and requires splicing at three locations.
Recent incidents of cable damage in the Baltic Sea, attributed to foreign-flagged vessels, have raised security concerns. Investigations into these incidents have been inconclusive regarding sabotage, but Finland's military intelligence warns of potential Russian efforts to harm underwater infrastructure.
The project has faced delays due to adverse weather and previous cable repairs. Future technology like Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) may improve monitoring of cable safety, although data privacy concerns exist.
