New Bronze Age Mines in Spain Reveal Insights into Scandinavian Metal Sources
Recent archaeological discoveries in Spain may clarify the origins of metals used in Scandinavian Bronze Age artifacts. The identification of six mining sites suggests extensive ancient trade networks in Europe.

Six Bronze Age mining sites have been identified in Extremadura, Spain, during a survey by the University of Gothenburg from February 9 to 16. The sites, located near Cabeza del Buey in Badajoz, contain copper, lead, and silver, crucial for Bronze Age economies and trade.
The findings support prior research indicating that metals used in Scandinavian artifacts likely originated from this region. The project involved collaboration with Universidad de Sevilla and Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Badajoz. These discoveries may enhance understanding of ancient trade networks and the organization of metal extraction in southwestern Europe, underscoring its significance in historical economic interconnections.
