New Data Center in Westpoort to Consume Significant Water and Electricity Resources
The Pure DC data center in Westpoort will utilize 420,000 cubic meters of water and 807 million kilowatt-hours annually. Its construction raises concerns over resource consumption amid existing municipal and national restrictions.

Pure DC's data center in Westpoort will consume approximately 420,000 cubic meters of industrial water and 807 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The facility, which is the largest in Amsterdam, will be solely operated by Microsoft and is expected to push the local electricity grid to its limits.
Although it is permitted under previous regulations, the construction raises concerns among local authorities regarding water scarcity, particularly during peak summer usage. Waternet, responsible for industrial water supply, plans to accommodate increased demand.
The center aims to channel waste heat for local heating, contingent on infrastructure developments. However, the Environment Agency remains cautious about the overall reduction in water use due to this technology.
