New Gold Lays Off 85 Employees at New Afton Mine Amid Transition to Production Phase
New Gold will lay off 85 employees at the New Afton mine near Kamloops as it transitions to a production-focused phase. The layoffs follow a recent shareholder vote to sell the company to Coeur Mining, although New Gold states the layoffs are unrelated to the acquisition.

New Gold announced the layoff of 85 employees at the New Afton gold and copper mine, located west of Kamloops. The layoffs occur as the mine completes work on its C-Zone block cave project and moves into a planned production-focused period.
Commercial production at the C-Zone began in late 2024. These layoffs follow a shareholder vote to sell New Gold to U.S.-based Coeur Mining. However, New Gold clarified that the layoffs are part of the project cycle and not connected to the upcoming acquisition.
