New Method Converts Plastic Waste into Jet Fuel at Low Cost
A new process developed by researchers converts plastic waste into jet fuel, with production costs estimated at $1.0 to $1.8 per kilogram. This innovation aims to support the aviation industry's efforts to reduce reliance on conventional fossil fuels amidst rising emission concerns.

Researchers at Nanjing Forestry University and Tsinghua University have developed a method to convert plastic waste into jet fuel, utilizing a tandem reactor system that operates at temperatures of 460 °C and 160 °C. The process employs a ruthenium catalyst that significantly enhances selectivity and hydrogenation efficiency compared to conventional catalysts, achieving performance over 100 times greater than a commercial alternative.
Production costs for the resulting fuel are estimated to be between $1.0 and $1.8 per kilogram, making it competitive with fossil-based jet fuel prices. This advancement addresses the aviation sector's challenges in finding sustainable fuel sources and could mitigate reliance on volatile global oil markets.
