New Mexico House Committee Tables Bill on Produced Water Regulations Amid Political Controversy

On February 7, a New Mexico House committee voted 5-4 to table House Bill 207, aimed at implementing new regulations for the reuse and discharge of treated produced water, a byproduct of oil and gas extraction. Committee member Micaela Lara Cadena alleged political horse-trading related to the proposed hydrogen facility by Kit Carson Electric Cooperative in Questa and Chevron's involvement, as Chevron owns the closed Questa molybdenum mine and likely holds the necessary water rights for the hydrogen project.
