New Mining Projects in Australia, Canada, and Sweden Target Future Battery Metals Supply
Global demand for battery metals is projected to rise significantly over the next decade, leading to potential supply shortages. Various companies are developing new mining projects for graphite, lithium, and rare earth metals. Key projects include Hastings Technology Metals' Yangibana in Australia, Northern Graphite's facility in Saudi Arabia, and Talga Group's Nunasvaara South in Sweden. These projects aim to support the growing demand for materials used in electric vehicle batteries and other technologies.

The global demand for battery metals is set to increase, causing potential supply shortages. Hastings Technology Metals plans to commence production at its Yangibana project in Western Australia in Q4 2026, aiming for 15,000 tons of mixed rare earth carbonate annually.
Northern Graphite is developing a facility in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, with production expected to start in 2028, targeting 25,000 tons of graphite concentrate. Talga Group aims to produce 19,500 tons of anode material per year at Nunasvaara South in Sweden, with government approvals secured to proceed. Demand for these metals is driven by battery and electronics production.
