Construction is set to begin in 2026, with initial trials planned for 2028.

The Agricultural and Food Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Hillsborough will establish the Ruminant Emissions Research Facility (RERF) to focus on reducing emissions from dairy, beef, and sheep systems. The facility aims to support Northern Ireland's agricultural sector in achieving sustainability goals by identifying effective mitigation strategies for methane and ammonia emissions.
Funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), construction of the RERF is planned to start in 2026 and be completed by early summer 2027, with trials commencing in 2028. The facility will also contribute to the National GHG and ammonia inventories and support the development of breeding traits for improved environmental efficiency.
