New RuP₂-Ni₂P/NPC Catalyst Reduces Overpotentials for Hydrogen Evolution
The RuP₂-Ni₂P/NPC catalyst achieves overpotentials of 3 mV in alkaline and 17.3 mV in acidic conditions, presenting a cost-effective alternative to platinum in green hydrogen production. This innovation addresses high costs and durability issues associated with current hydrogen evolution catalysts, facilitating broader adoption of electrolyzer technology.

The newly developed RuP₂-Ni₂P/NPC catalyst demonstrates low overpotentials of 3 mV in alkaline environments and 17.3 mV in acidic conditions, marking it as a leading option compared to platinum catalysts. It showcases exceptional stability by maintaining performance for over 500 hours in alkaline and over 300 hours in acidic media at a current density of 100 mA cm⁻².
This catalyst design is significant in mitigating the high costs of precious metals and enhancing the durability of non-platinum alternatives, thus promoting industrial-scale hydrogen production. Future applications may include large-scale hydrogen facilities and distributed electrolyzers. The research introduces a design strategy that can be applied to develop advanced catalysts across various energy conversion technologies.
