New Strategic Framework for Data Centers in Lower Austria Announced
A new strategic framework for data center applications in Lower Austria, effective for projects announced after April 23, 2026, aims to establish guidelines for development. This framework includes zoning regulations and renewable energy requirements to manage the anticipated growth in the sector.

Lower Austria has proposed a strategic framework for data center applications that will apply to projects announced post-April 23, 2026. It introduces a new industrial zoning category for developments over 0.5 hectares and mandates specific location ordinances for sites larger than 3 hectares.
Developers must incorporate renewable energy sources and heat reuse networks in their plans. The framework aims to manage the potential impact of up to 100 new inquiries that could consume 3.4GW of power, equivalent to double the state's annual energy consumption. However, the Austrian Data Center Association has expressed concerns about the regulatory complexity introduced by these new rules.
