New Zealand Increases Space Launch Limit from 100 to 1000 to Boost Sector Growth
The New Zealand government has raised the permitted number of space launches from 100 to 1000, enabling growth in the space and advanced aviation sectors. This decision follows a review of space vehicle launch debris regulations and is projected to support industry planning until at least 2050. The space sector is expected to contribute $2.47 billion to the economy in 2024, a 48% increase from five years ago. The Awarua Satellite Ground Station in Southland will benefit significantly from this expansion.

New Zealand's Space Minister Judith Collins announced an increase in the permitted number of space launches from 100 to 1000, following a review of regulations. The current limit, set in 2017, has led to rapid growth in the sector, making New Zealand the third most frequent launcher of orbital rockets.
Projections indicate the new limit will not be reached until at least 2050. In 2024, the space sector is expected to contribute $2.47 billion to the economy. Southland's Awarua Satellite Ground Station is expected to see significant growth due to this increase, supported by a $4.55 million project.
