Newcastle-under-Lyme Council Owed £132k by Liquidated Walleys Quarry Operator
A year after Walleys Quarry Ltd's collapse in February 2025, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is still owed £132,097. This amount includes legal fees and unpaid business rates. The council is in negotiations with the company's liquidators to recover the debt, but concerns have been raised about the recovery process's duration. The Environment Agency is currently managing the landfill site, ensuring emissions remain below annoyance thresholds. A hydrogeological survey is planned to address the site's long-term future.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is owed £132,097 by Walleys Quarry Ltd, which went into liquidation in February 2025. This debt includes £102,000 in legal fees and unpaid business rates. The council is in correspondence with the liquidators to recover the funds but has expressed concerns over the recovery timeline.
The Environment Agency is managing the landfill site post-collapse and has kept hydrogen sulphide emissions below the annoyance threshold. A hydrogeological survey will be conducted later this year to inform the site's long-term strategy.
