NextEra Energy Proposes 600 MW Solar Project in Alamosa County, Colorado
NextEra Energy plans to develop the Spud Valley Energy Center, a 600 MW solar and battery storage project on 2,578 acres in Alamosa County, Colorado. The project aims to utilize land previously used for agriculture, as water scarcity drives local farmers to reduce their water usage. Initial construction of 200 MW of solar and battery storage is expected to begin in 2027, with completion by the end of 2029.

NextEra Energy is proposing the Spud Valley Energy Center, a solar project on 2,578 acres in Alamosa County, Colorado, targeting 600 MW of solar energy and 600 MW of battery storage. This initiative arises from water scarcity in the Upper Rio Grande Basin, leading agricultural landowners to explore alternative uses for their land.
Construction is slated to start in 2027, with plans to initially build 200 MW of solar and battery storage, and aims to tie into a local substation by late 2029. Alamosa County is currently reviewing the project's permit application.
