Nexus Power Develops Biodegradable Batteries from Crop Waste for Electric Vehicles
Nexus Power, an Indian startup based in Bhubaneswar, is creating biodegradable batteries from agricultural waste to offer a sustainable alternative to lithium-based batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). Founded in 2020 by sisters Nishita and Nikita Baliarsingh, the company utilizes a proprietary process to convert crop residue into nano crystal-based battery cells, which are cost-effective and offer higher energy density.
Nexus aims to commercialize its technology by 2026, targeting EV manufacturers and energy storage developers. The startup has completed over 30,000 charge-discharge cycles and has filed more than 50 patents.
By 2028, Nexus plans to scale production to 280,000 kWh and engage 300 farmers, contributing to rural income and reducing carbon emissions. The global battery market is projected to reach $680 billion by 2034, indicating significant growth potential for Nexus's innovation.
