NGOs Call for Further Studies on Srepok Hydropower Dam Capacity Increase in Cambodia
Civil society organizations in Cambodia are urging further environmental and social impact assessments for the Lower Srepok 3 hydropower dam project after its capacity was increased from 300 megawatts to 376 megawatts. Concerns were raised during a dialogue in Phnom Penh regarding the project's impact on waterways and potential displacement of nearly 4,270 families.
The project's cost has risen to $900.2 million, significantly higher than the initial $83 million estimate. The Royal Group Power, in partnership with Chinese firms, is progressing with the project, which may lead to inadequate compensation for affected residents. Stakeholders expressed dissatisfaction with the clarity of compensation policies and the consultation process.
