NHPC Executive Director Sandeep Batra Highlights Growth and Challenges in India's Power Sector
Sandeep Batra, Executive Director at NHPC Limited, reports that India's installed power capacity rose from 248 GW in 2014 to 520 GW by January 2026, with renewable energy capacity increasing from 35 GW to 212 GW. However, transmission infrastructure has not kept pace with renewable additions, and discoms face financial distress with losses around Rs 7 trillion. The Draft Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 aims to enhance competition in the distribution sector. Batra also emphasizes the importance of workplace synergy through empowerment and recognition of contributions.

Sandeep Batra, Executive Director at NHPC Limited, noted that India's power sector has expanded significantly, with total installed capacity increasing from 248 GW in 2014 to 520 GW in January 2026. Renewable energy capacity rose from 35 GW to 212 GW.
However, the growth in renewable capacity has exceeded the development of transmission infrastructure. Discoms continue to face chronic financial challenges, accruing losses of approximately Rs 7 trillion.
The Draft Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 proposes open access provisions to foster competition in the distribution sector. Batra's previous role at Chenab Valley Power Projects involved managing contracts for major hydroelectric projects, where he focused on effective tendering processes. He advocates for creating workplace synergy through empowerment and recognition.
