Nhulunbuy Housing Crisis and Economic Development Challenges
The Northern Territory government faces criticism over inadequate housing support in Nhulunbuy as Rio Tinto prepares for mine closure in 2029. Traditional owners demand clarity on housing plans amidst a critical shortage impacting local businesses.

The Northern Territory government has criticized the Developing East Arnhem Land (DEAL) agency for insufficient support of local businesses during a housing crisis in Nhulunbuy. With Rio Tinto set to close its bauxite mine in 2029, residents report a severe housing shortage, affecting business operations.
DEAL currently manages only 17% of local housing, with the majority privately owned or held by the government. Traditional owners are investing $8 million into new housing using royalties from deals with Rio Tinto.
The NT government plans to investigate Nhulunbuy's housing market and aims for decisions regarding the mining lease hand-over by the end of next year. Effective transitions are critical for sustaining local economic growth.
