Nice to Host Testing of OceanWell's Deep-Sea Desalination Technology
Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur has partnered with OceanWell to explore deep-sea desalination in the Baie des Anges, aiming for a pilot phase in 2026-2027. The underwater system would operate over 400 meters deep, utilizing ocean pressure and potentially reducing energy use by 40%. Environmental impacts will be monitored before any larger project is approved, which could occur between 2029 and 2030. Concerns about deep-sea ecosystem impacts have been raised by environmental groups.

Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur signed an agreement with OceanWell to study deep-sea desalination in the Baie des Anges. The underwater system, operating over 400 meters deep, aims to convert seawater to freshwater using ocean pressure, potentially consuming 40% less energy than traditional plants.
A pilot phase is planned for 2026-2027 to monitor environmental impacts. If successful, full deployment may occur between 2029 and 2030. Local authorities emphasize that the current research agreement does not include connections to the drinking water network, addressing concerns from environmental groups about ecosystem impacts.
