Nigeria Establishes Mine-Tech Hub to Enhance Mineral Processing and Innovation
Nigeria has inaugurated the Mine-Tech Innovation Hub at Nasarawa State University to strengthen local mineral processing capabilities. This initiative, part of a ₦30 billion national innovation program, aims to transition from raw mineral exports to a technology-focused mining economy, addressing the challenges of underinvestment and limited technological advancement in the sector.
The Mine-Tech Innovation Hub, launched in Nigeria at Nasarawa State University, aims to build local mineral processing capacity and foster industrial growth. This initiative is a component of a ₦30 billion federal innovation infrastructure supported by TETFund and UNDP.
The hub will integrate education, research, and industry to develop practical solutions for the mining sector, which currently contributes less than 1% to GDP despite Nigeria's vast mineral resources. Successful implementation could position Nigeria to compete in critical mineral markets, particularly in lithium beneficiation and battery materials processing. To ensure effectiveness, collaboration with the private sector and sustained government support will be crucial.
