Nigeria Launches $500 Million SPIN Project for Irrigation and Hydropower Enhancement
The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) Project, a $500 million initiative supported by the World Bank. The project aims to improve irrigation, enhance dam safety, and boost hydropower generation to address food security and economic growth. The initiative is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and is structured around four key components: institutional strengthening, irrigation modernization, dam safety improvements, and effective project management.

The Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) Project, launched by the Federal Government, is a $500 million initiative backed by the World Bank. It focuses on enhancing irrigation systems, improving dam safety, and increasing hydropower generation, thus addressing food security and economic growth.
The project, aligned with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to reduce reliance on rain-fed agriculture and prepare for climate change impacts. It includes four components: strengthening water resources management, modernizing irrigation, enhancing dam operations, and improving project management. As of October 27, 2025, the project has been declared effective, with 26 states meeting eligibility requirements.
