Nitro Sells Regional Wastewater Utility to West Virginia American Water for $20 Million
Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt finalized a $20 million agreement with West Virginia American Water to sell the Nitro Regional Wastewater Utility and sewer plant. The state Public Service Commission approved the transaction, allowing the utility to manage the city's water and wastewater systems. Upgrades to the sewer system are projected to cost $42 million over five years. Casebolt noted that sewer rates will increase, but improvements are necessary due to existing system deficiencies.

Sewer bills are expected to rise, with potential increases of up to 50 percent. West Virginia American plans $42 million in upgrades over the next five years to improve system capacity and prevent backups.
