NOAA Approves TMC USA's Consolidated Deep-Seabed Mining Application for CCZ Exploration and Recovery
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has determined that The Metals Company USA LLC's consolidated application for an exploration license and commercial recovery permit for polymetallic nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Zone is in substantial compliance with U.S. regulations. This represents a significant step in deep-seabed mining, allowing TMC USA to cover an area of approximately 65,000 km², compared to a previous application covering 25,000 km². The estimated resource within this area is 619 million tonnes of wet nodules.

NOAA has approved The Metals Company USA LLC's consolidated application for an exploration license and commercial recovery permit under the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act, marking a notable advancement in deep-seabed mining. TMC USA's application encompasses a 65,000 km² area in the Clarion Clipperton Zone, significantly larger than its earlier application.
This process allows for efficient integration of exploration data into the commercial recovery review. The application is based on over a decade of research and aims to provide critical metals with a lower environmental impact. The project is positioned within ongoing international discussions about deep-sea mining governance.
