Normal Implements Zoning Regulations for Battery Energy Storage Systems
Normal's Planning Commission has recommended zoning regulations for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to accommodate Rivian's proposed project. The regulations aim to address safety, aesthetics, and operational standards for future BESS developments in the area.

Normal's Planning Commission has proposed zoning regulations for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), following Rivian's interest in constructing a facility near its manufacturing plant. The ordinance outlines aesthetic, safety, lighting, and setback requirements, including a 400-foot setback from occupied structures for principal-use BESS.
If approved by the town council on June 15, the regulations will limit BESS installations to industrial zones (M-1 and M-2) and differentiate between private and commercial systems. The initiative aims to modernize energy management and adapt to evolving battery technology, highlighting the growing demands on the aging energy infrastructure.
