North Carolina General Assembly Discusses Nuclear Energy Policy Amid Rising Demand

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREFUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The North Carolina General Assembly's Energy Policy Commission convened to evaluate nuclear energy's role in meeting rising demand, particularly from A.I. data centers. Duke Energy proposed transitioning from coal to nuclear, planning to retire the last coal plant by 2040, with discussions on potentially extending this deadline.

Duke Energy is seeking permits for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at the Belews Creek Steam Station, with designs generating 300 megawatts or less. The federal government supports financing through the 48E Investment Tax Credit and the Energy Dominance Financing Program, providing low-interest loans and covering up to half the cost of projects.

The U.S. Energy Department plans to begin construction on at least three small reactors by July 4 to address supply chain and design challenges. However, experts warn that SMRs may be 50 to 60% more expensive than larger reactors, which may limit their economic viability.
