Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative Faces Opposition for Deimos Substation Proposal
The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative's proposed Deimos substation in Brambleton has encountered significant resistance from the Loudoun County Board due to its proximity to residential areas and a childcare center. Supervisors are pushing for gas-insulated substation designs to mitigate community impact.

The Loudoun County Board has expressed concerns over the proposed Deimos substation by Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, planned along Belmont Ridge Road and Arcola Mills Drive. The location is near existing transmission lines and is currently undeveloped.
Supervisors emphasized that the substation's proximity—260 feet from the nearest residence—does not meet their preferred standard of at least 500 feet. The board has urged NOVEC to consider gas-insulated substations to reduce neighborhood impact, though representatives indicated that NOVEC does not utilize this type. The board plans to take final action on the proposal in a future meeting, amid ongoing discussions about community standards for substations.
