Northumbria University Partners with Whytrig Middle School for Space Research Project

SPACE ECONOMY

Whytrig Middle School has partnered with Northumbria University for a space research project funded by a Royal Society Partnership Grant. Year 7 pupils are exploring satellite communication using laser technology at the Northumbria Space Technology Laboratory.

The project, led by teacher Preetha Lowden and Dr. Luca Franci, involves 80 students investigating how satellites communicate, focusing on laser communications and CubeSats. CubeSats transmit data 1000 times faster than radio frequencies.

The initiative also aims to promote STEM careers and skills development among students. Northumbria is developing the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre with a £50 million investment to support the UK's space sector.
