Norwalk City Council to Consider $12 Billion Data Center Development Proposal Next Week
Norwalk, Iowa, may approve a $12 billion data center project, known as 'Project West', at a city council meeting on March 5. The development would occupy 282 acres and could create around 600 construction jobs and 80 permanent technology jobs. The estimated taxable valuation is between $400 million and $500 million, generating approximately $15 million annually in new taxes. The project aims to enhance local infrastructure without requesting tax incentives. A decision is expected at the upcoming council meeting.

The Norwalk City Council is set to consider a $12 billion data center campus proposal, 'Project West', on March 5. The project could be the largest private investment in Warren County, transforming 282 acres into a data center over 5 to 10 years.
If approved, construction could start this summer, with operations anticipated by 2030. The project is projected to create about 600 construction jobs and 80 permanent technology positions, alongside generating $15 million in annual tax revenue from an estimated taxable valuation of $400 million to $500 million.
Developers are not seeking tax increment financing or grants. The city is addressing environmental concerns related to water and electricity usage, and has consulted with other cities on data center management.
