Norwegian Fast Ferries to Implement Battery-Swapping Technology
Norled is introducing a battery-swapping robot for its fast ferries in Norway, enhancing operational efficiency. The technology allows for quick battery changes, supporting a shift towards electrification in maritime transport without jeopardizing engineering jobs.

Norled is set to deploy a battery-swapping robot on its fast ferries, MS Baronen and MS Baronessen, operating between Nesoddtangen and Lysaker. This technology will enable swift battery exchanges, allowing vessels to maintain schedules while charging batteries on land.
The initial phase will see hybrid propulsion, utilizing battery power for port operations and hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) for other segments. Installation and testing are scheduled for completion by winter.
The Norwegian Union of Marine Engineers views this development positively, emphasizing that it requires skilled monitoring and does not pose a threat to engineering roles. The initiative aims to reduce fossil fuel reliance while ensuring safety and efficiency.
