Norwegian Government Considers Temporary Ban on Cryptocurrency Mining Amidst Data Center Growth

The Norwegian government is exploring a temporary ban on cryptocurrency mining due to its high energy consumption and limited job creation. Currently, 8 out of 54 active data center operators in Norway engage in cryptocurrency activities.

Despite the ban discussions, the government supports the data center industry as essential infrastructure for the green transition. New regulations require data centers to register with the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom), which will oversee compliance.

Notably, Tydal Data Center plans to transition fully to artificial intelligence (AI) by 2026, moving away from cryptocurrency mining. Meanwhile, smaller operators in Øst-Finnmark are seeking energy agreements for cryptocurrency production. Critics, including Sofie Marhaug from the Red Party, emphasize the energy demands of both cryptocurrency and AI data storage.
