Norwegian Government Scrutinizes Crypto Mining Power Consumption Amid Bitcoin Decline
The Norwegian government is investigating discrepancies in crypto mining power consumption as Bitcoin values drop significantly. This scrutiny comes amidst ongoing debates about the environmental impact and regulation of cryptocurrency operations within the country.

The Norwegian government has expressed concern over the actual power consumption of crypto mining operations, which currently account for 20% of data center energy usage. Recent market data indicates that in October, when Bitcoin values peaked, data centers consumed about 7% of total power in the region, which plummeted to 4% as values fell nearly 40%.
Digitalization Minister Karianne Tung emphasized the need for stringent regulations, noting that while the aim is to phase out crypto mining, current operations remain active pending registration. Increased mining activity in low-cost energy regions poses challenges for energy management in Norway.
