NPDC Opens New Thermal Drying Facility for Wastewater Treatment in New Plymouth
The New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) opened a new thermal drying facility at the New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant, set to enhance wastewater treatment for 25 years. The facility, completed within the $75.4 million budget with $37 million from the Government's Infrastructure Reference Group Fund, replaces an aging dryer that had served for 22 years. The new technology improves energy efficiency and increases sludge handling capacity by 20%, accommodating a growing population.

NPDC's new thermal drying facility at the New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant was officially opened, ensuring wastewater treatment for the district for another 25 years. The project, budgeted at $75.4 million with $37 million from the Government's Infrastructure Reference Group Fund, replaces an outdated dryer that was difficult to maintain.
Constructed over two and a half years, the new facility enhances energy efficiency and increases sludge capacity by 20%. The previous dryer was 22 years old at the time of the new facility's construction, which began in 2023.
