NSW Approves Foresight's 150MWh BESS; Banpu Proposes 1GWh Facility under EPBC Act
Foresight Group's 150MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) has received approval from NSW authorities, with construction set for early 2026. Banpu Energy Australia has proposed a larger 1GWh BESS project at Lidsdale, currently under environmental review.

Foresight Group Australia's Hume North BESS, featuring containerised lithium-ion batteries with 2-hour duration capacity, has been approved following public submissions and modifications including a firefighting water tank. The project will connect to the Transgrid Albury to Hume 132kV transmission line and is expected to create 50 construction jobs and two operational roles over its 30-year lifespan, with construction commencing in early 2026.
Banpu Energy Australia has submitted a proposal for a 500MW/1GWh facility at Lidsdale, which necessitates an environmental assessment under the EPBC Act due to the clearance of native vegetation. This initiative adds to a growing trend of large-scale battery storage projects being proposed in Australia.
