NTPC TN Energy Company Selects Site for Upper Bhavani Pumped Storage Project
The Upper Bhavani Pumped Storage Project in Nilgiris district has advanced after NTPC TN Energy Company Limited (NTECL) shortlisted one alignment from three options, emphasizing lower forest diversion and ecological risk. The 1,000 MW project, a joint venture of NTPC Ltd and Tangedco, has applied for forest clearance to divert 56.35 ha of forest land.
NTECL assessed alternatives based on several factors including technical feasibility, water availability, and environmental impact. The selected option avoids creating new submergence by utilizing existing reservoirs. Alternative 1 was dismissed due to poor year-round water access and increased environmental risks, while Alternative 3 was ruled out for requiring significant forest land diversion and impacting local tribal communities.
