Nyirahindwe 1 Hydropower Plant Commences Operations in Rwanda
The Nyirahindwe 1 hydropower plant in Rwanda is now operational, adding 968 kW to the national grid. This facility aims to provide electricity to approximately 70,000 residents, enhancing energy access in the region.

The Nyirahindwe 1 hydropower plant has begun commercial operations in Nyamasheke district, contributing 968 kW of renewable energy capacity to Rwanda's electricity network. It is projected to generate 4.2 GWh annually, serving around 70,000 people.
The project involved collaboration with Hydroneo and various partners, including Rwanda Energy Group and GIZ. Financing was managed by Finergreen and environmental oversight was conducted by IBIS. The project benefits from grant funding and will see Energy Utility Corporation Limited act as the electricity offtaker. This development aligns with Rwanda's goals for renewable energy expansion and improved electricity access.
