Oak Ridge National Laboratory and EPB Partnership Advances Microgrid Technology for Grid Resilience

ENERGY STORAGEPOWER GRIDS & TRANSMISSION

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Chattanooga's EPB have reached a milestone in their partnership to enhance grid resilience through microgrid technology. Supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Electricity, the project involves the installation of microgrid equipment within EPB's network, with capabilities to reduce outages and improve power reliability.

The initiative introduces approximately 58 megawatt hours of energy storage across five microgrids. These systems can provide backup power to over a thousand residential customers and critical services during outages. The partnership, ongoing for over a decade, aims to deploy innovative technologies to improve energy service and reduce costs.
