Occidental and Enbridge Launch Joint Venture for Carbon Capture and Sequestration Hub in Louisiana
In a significant move towards sustainable energy solutions, 1pointfive, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, has partnered with Enbridge Inc. to establish a cutting-edge carbon capture and sequestration hub in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. This joint venture, equally owned by both companies, underscores a strategic commitment to environmental stewardship while addressing industrial emissions in the region.
The Pelican Sequestration Hub is designed to securely store between 2 to 3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, a goal anchored by a robust 25-year agreement with CF Industries and its partners, Jera Co., Inc. and Mitsui Co., Ltd. This collaboration centers around a planned low-carbon ammonia production facility located in Ascension Parish, illustrating a comprehensive approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while bolstering local industry.
1pointfive will spearhead the development and operation of the sequestration facilities, ensuring that carbon dioxide is safely stored deep underground. Meanwhile, Enbridge will take charge of constructing and managing the pipeline infrastructure necessary for transporting CO2 from various industrial sources to the hub. This partnership not only capitalizes on each company's strengths but also responds to an increasing demand for innovative carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies across the energy sector.
Jeff Alvarez, President of 1pointfive Sequestration, expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting the potential for economic growth and strengthened industrial capabilities in Louisiana. "We look forward to combining our expertise managing carbon dioxide with Enbridge’s deep capabilities in energy transportation," he stated, emphasizing the project’s role in unlocking value from captured carbon.
The establishment of the Pelican Sequestration Hub marks a pivotal moment in Louisiana's ambition to attract investments in low-carbon industries, showcasing how large-scale infrastructure can effectively support the decarbonization of heavy industries. With Occidental's extensive experience in carbon storage and the strategic vision of both companies, this venture is poised to contribute significantly to the region's environmental and economic landscape.
