Offshore Wind Projects Could Cover 11% of North Sea by 2050, Study Finds
Projected offshore wind developments in the North Sea may reach 11% by 2050, based on current political commitments. This increase from 1% today will involve approximately 19,400 turbines across seven countries.

By 2050, offshore wind projects could cover 11% of the North Sea, according to research from Heriot-Watt University. The analysis indicates a rise from about 1% today, estimating a total of 19,400 offshore turbines, including those already operational.
The UK is expected to remain the leading nation with around 6,300 turbines, followed by Germany and the Netherlands with approximately 4,300 and just over 4,200 respectively. The Netherlands is projected to utilize about 19% of its North Sea waters for wind farms. The study encompassed operational and planned projects across the North Sea nations: the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the UK, Norway, and France, highlighting significant growth in offshore wind capacity in response to national commitments.
