Ohio Data Centers Secure Tax Breaks Amid Controversy Over Economic Impact
Amazon, Meta, and Google benefited from significant property tax abatements in Ohio, totaling millions. While proponents argue these incentives foster economic growth, critics contend they unfairly burden local communities and schools.

Ohio data centers have accessed millions in property tax breaks, with Amazon Web Services avoiding $5.4 million and Meta's Prometheus campus costing $1.8 million in forgone taxes. Local officials have leveraged agreements under the Community Reinvestment Area program, which can last up to 30 years, to attract major tech companies.
In 2024, Franklin County reported over $8.4 billion in total tax abatements. Critics argue that these deals, combined with state sales tax breaks, concentrate funding responsibilities on local residents.
Some companies, however, contribute payments to schools to compensate for lost tax revenue. Legislative action on this issue remains uncertain, despite increasing scrutiny.
