Old Factory in Welland, Ont. Unveils Potential Billion-Dollar Graphite Resource
A previously derelict factory in Welland, Ontario, could become a significant player in the battery-grade graphite market. With global demand expected to double by 2030, this site may meet a critical supply gap dominated by China.

A factory in Welland, Ontario, has been identified as a potential source of high-quality graphite, with significant investment already made to evaluate its viability for battery applications. Charest, the investor, has reportedly spent tens of millions on the project, following a land acquisition for $2, which was part of a larger undisclosed deal.
Benchmark Mineral Intelligence projects battery-grade graphite demand will increase from 5.4 million tonnes in 2025 to 10.1 million tonnes by 2030. China's dominance in this market is notable, controlling 90% of anode manufacturing and 75% of mined graphite. The recent export restrictions from Beijing highlight the geopolitical risks in supply chains.
