Oman and China Collaborate to Establish Green Hydrogen Equipment Manufacturing Facility

In a strategic move to bolster Omanás position in the green hydrogen landscape, United Engineering Services (UES), an Omani firm, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China's Sungrow Hydrogen Sci & Tech Co. The partnership aims to develop a manufacturing facility in Duqm, a burgeoning industrial hub in southern Oman, dedicated to producing essential equipment for the country's green hydrogen sector.

The joint venture will focus on the production of electrolyzers, gas separation and purification systems, and supporting infrastructure. This initiative is part of a broader $35 billion objective to transform Duqm into a global hydrogen hub, with the goal of generating 1 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030. Oman aspires to become the worldás sixth-largest hydrogen exporter by that same year, with projections indicating that hydrogen sales could surpass liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2050.

Sungrow Hydrogen, recognized for its expertise in hydrogen production technologies, operates China's first automated assembly line for alkaline electrolysers with an annual capacity of 3 GW. The company has already secured significant contracts in Oman, including a recent order to supply water electrolysis equipment for a 320 MW green ammonia project led by the Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Company, a subsidiary of India's ACME Group.

Dr. Salim al Harthy, CEO of UES, emphasized that this collaboration is a pivotal step for expanding Omanás renewable energy capabilities and reinforcing its role as a hub for advanced hydrogen technologies. As international interests in Oman's hydrogen potential grow, this partnership marks a foundational advancement in the country's renewable energy landscape.
