The Ontario government announced a $29.5 million grant for the Victoria Harbour wastewater treatment plant project, which has been operating at maximum capacity. The plant's Phase 2 upgrade was initially budgeted at $27 million, but tender bids in 2024 were closer to $48 million.
Tay council had previously faced challenges in securing funding, while neighboring municipalities received similar upgrades. The provincial funding is part of a $78 million investment in water infrastructure across Ontario.
Mayor Ted Walker acknowledged the support from provincial officials and the efforts of staff in applying for the grant. The funding will enable development in the area and potentially reduce development charges for residents. The council plans to re-tender the project to manage costs, aiming to cover nearly two-thirds of the expenses with the grant.
