Ontario Plans Carbon Storage to Support Sarnia's Low-Carbon Economy
CARBON CAPTUREHYDROGEN
Ontario's 2024 fact sheet identifies potential geologic carbon storage formations under Lake Huron and Lake Erie. The province plans to stimulate carbon sequestration investments in the Sarnia-Lambton area, which is home to refineries and chemical producers.
The initiative aims to reduce emissions and mitigate impacts of the federal carbon tax, helping retain local industries and jobs. Development will take a few years, as final regulations are established and stakeholder collaboration occurs. This project may also support Sarnia's hydrogen hub initiative by attracting low-carbon hydrogen projects.
